The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) | GMAT | GMAT Details

About GMAT
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a Standardized, computer-adaptive test that measures Verbal, Mathematical and Analytical writing skills. It is conducted online by Educational Testing Services (ETS) through Sylvan testing centers located in all the major cities in India. Those who wish to enroll for courses in Business Management in American universities have to take the GMAT test and submit their scores to the department.

Importance of GMAT
GMAT helps business schools in assessing the potential of applicants for advanced study in Business and Management. Nearly 900 management institutes - Most of these being US based - give admission in the MBA program on the basis of GMAT scores. If you want to pursue management degree in US GMAT is the gateway for that.

Through this test business schools assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. Business Schools use the test as one predictor of academic performance in an MBA program or in other graduate management programs. If you want to have admission to an MBA program, chances are you'll need to take the GMAT. This is highly accepted test for management education.

Test structure
The GMAT consists of four separately timed sections. The GMAT exam consists of three main parts:

Analytical Writing Assessment
Quantitative section
Verbal section

The GMAT tests your fundamental skills and does not require any subject-specific theoretical study. The Quantitative section has two types of questions: Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency. The Verbal Section has three types of questions:

Sentence Correction
Critical Reasoning
Reading Comprehension

There are a total of 78 questions, 37 in Quantitative and 41 in Verbal. These 2 sections have a time limit of 75 minutes each. The Analytical writing section consists of two short essays to be written in 30 minutes each. The first is the Analysis of an Issue, in which you need to analyze the issue presented and explain your views on it. The second essay is Analysis of an Argument, in which a given argument has to be critically analyzed and evaluated. For both the essays, the emphasis is on the "Analytical" part, and not on the "Writing" part. The total test duration is around 4 hours.

A New Section
In June 2012, the GMAT exam will introduce a groundbreaking section designed to measure test taker's ability to evaluate information presented in new formats and from multiple sources. The Integrated Reasoning score will provide a new data point for schools to differentiate among candidates. The New, Innovative Question Formats are as below:

Graphics Interpretation: Graphs or graphical images must be interpreted to fill in the blanks of answer statements accurately.
Table Analysis: A sortable table, similar to a spreadsheet, has to be analysed to determine whether statements are accurate.
Two-Part Analysis: Solutions involve two components, and possible answers will be in a table format with a column for each component.
Multi-Source Reasoning: Different data from two or three tabbed pages must be used to answer the questions.

Eligibility
A 10+2 pass out of any recognized Indian Board or University is a suitable qualification to take the GMAT but generally students go for it after completing their Bachelor’s degree. Test takers can take the test only once every calendar month. The test scores are valid for a period of 5 years.

How to Apply
Application bulletin can be obtained by writing to Institute of Psychological and Educational Measurement, Allahabad or can be directly downloaded fromwww.gmat.org. The fees payable for GMAT varies from country to country and must be paid in US$. The actual rates can be verified from the Bulletin.

One good thing about the GMAT is that it's offered throughout the year and all over the world, so finding a seat and registering isn't all too difficult. This is because the GMAT is a computerized test, and there is no need for the hassle associated with paper-based tests. On that note, if you insist on writing the paper-based GMAT, you can do so. Keep in mind, the paper GMAT is only offered a few times a year.

Online registration: An applicant can register online on GMAT's official website:

www.mba.com
www.gmac.com

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) | GRE Details

About GRE

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test is a multiple-choice admission test for applicants to graduate schools. It is a common prerequisite for all Graduate School applicants. It is developed and conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS)-a subsidiary of the Graduate Record Examination Board of the U.S.A. The test is a computer-adaptive test (CAT), and consists of three scored sections.

The scores of this standardized, computer adaptive format test help graduate schools to assess the advanced study potential of their prospective students. GRE test scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records and other qualifications for graduate study. GRE offers two kinds of Examinations to enable admissions panel to assess the applicants and their attitude towards their chosen fields of study - GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test. Most applicants to Graduate Schools are generally asked to take the GRE General test.

Importance of GRE

The GRE General Test measures the skills that you've acquired over the high school and college years. It is an aptitude test because it is meant to measure your potential to succeed in graduate school. While the GRE is only one of several criteria that graduate schools use to evaluate your application, it is one of the most important. This is particularly true if your college GPA is not as high as you'd like. Exceptional GRE scores can open up new opportunities for grad school. The GRE General Test contains sections that measure verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing skills.

Eligibility

A 10+2 pass out of any recognized Indian Board or University is a suitable qualification to take the GRE but generally students go for it after completing their Bachelors degree.

Test Structure

Total time allotted for the Computer-adaptive GRE test is 3 hours, whereas for the Paper-based test it is 3 ¾ hours.

GRE offers two kinds of Examinations to enable admissions panel to assess the applicants and their attitude towards their chosen fields of study - GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test. Most applicants to Graduate Schools are generally asked to take the GRE General test.

GRE General Test: Generally taken by prospective graduate students, this test measures Verbal reasoning, Analytical and Critical Writing and Quantitative Reasoning skills of a candidate.

GRE Subject Test: This version of GRE exam assesses candidates' knowledge level and accomplishments in a specific field of study. Unlike the GRE General test, this test is available only thrice in a year and can be taken only as the paper-based test. The scores of this test are often required for doctoral programs in the US, though some universities require the GRE Subject test scores for Masters-level programs too. The eight subjects in which the GRE subject test is presently conducted are: Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology.
