Good number of graduate and business school applicants from India are taking the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), and the number continues to raise each year. The exam is gaining popularity among the Indian engineering graduates as the more colleges, universities and B-Schools are accepting it as a standardised test English-taught graduate and business programs, sometimes in place of GMAT. This trend can be felt in United States and other parts of the globe as well.
The GRE was significantly overhauled in August 2011 where the scoring scale was changed to a 130-170 scale from a 200-800 scale.
Both the General and Subject Tests of GRE have been revised. While general test is aimed at testing the candidate’s overall ability, objective of the subject tests is to test the candidate’s knowledge in that particular subject. This article covers all the aspects of both tests in detail.
The revised GRE General Test
This revised GRE General Test is available at about 700 test centers in more than 160 countries from all around the world for those who are interested in pursuing a master's, MBA, specialized master's in business or doctoral degree . GRE scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records, recommendation letters and other qualifications for graduate-level study.
The computer-based test is available on a continuous basis throughout the year, which makes the business easy for students.

The GRE Subject Tests
The GRE Subject Tests are achievement tests that measure the knowledge of a particular field of study. Prospective graduate school applicants take the Subject Tests where scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records, recommendation letters and other qualifications for graduate-level study. Although the scores may not be a requirement for admission to a particular program, admissions committees are likely to consider the scores if they are submitted.
The Subject Tests are given at paper-based test centers worldwide three times a year, in:
September
October
April
Each Subject Test is intended for students who have an undergraduate major or extensive background in one of these seven disciplines:
Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology
Biology
Chemistry

Psychology

Scores
Scoring of the Subject Test is a two-step process. First, the raw score is computed. This is the number of questions you answered correctly minus one-fourth the number of questions you answered incorrectly. Then the raw score is converted to a scaled score to account for differences in difficulty among the different test editions.
A total score is reported on a 200–990 score scale, in 10-point increments, although the score range for any particular Subject Test is usually smaller.
Sub scores are reported for the Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology; Biology; and Psychology Tests on a 20–99 score scale, in one-point increments, although the range for any particular Subject Test sub score is usually smaller.
